As General Manager and CEO of the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA,) Nuria Fernandez has more than 35 years of experience in the transportation field. Currently, she oversees all functions of VTA including bus and rail service, construction of mass transit facilities, extension of the regional heavy rail system (BART), and planning and construction of highway and other related projects in Santa Clara County. Ms. Fernandez currently serves as the Vice Chair of the American Public Transportation Association and will transition to the Chair position in the fall of 2019. She is also on the Executive Committee of the Transportation Research Board, in addition to several other organizations. Prior to taking on leadership of VTA, Ms. Fernandez served as Chief Operating Officer for the New York State Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), managed the operations of O’Hare International Airport, was Senior Vice President for Design and Construction at the Chicago Transit Authority and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, and provided high-level policy and program expertise at the U.S. Department of Transportation where she served as Deputy Administrator of the Federal Transit Administration. Ms. Fernandez has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Bradley University and an MBA from Roosevelt University in Illinois.
